Rockledge is the oldest incorporated city in Brevard County, founded in 1887 and named for the coquina ledges along the Indian River. Its homes run from riverfront houses on Rockledge Drive to the subdivisions that spread south and west once the space program made it a bedroom community in the 1960s. Ralph Carpenter Roofing is family-owned, runs its own crews out of our Melbourne office, and has been roofing in Rockledge since 2004. If you’re comparing roofers in Rockledge, you’ll get a local roofing company where Ralph and William Carpenter handle every estimate themselves. License CCC1330139.
Along Rockledge Drive, some houses go back to the city’s resort years and have steeper roofs, wood plank decking and trim worth keeping. Most of the city, though, is neighborhoods built from the late 1950s through the 1990s, such as Levitt Park, Woodsmere, Kings Grant and Georgetown, where block homes with hip roofs and architectural shingles are the norm. Subdivisions off Fiske Boulevard and Barnes Boulevard, plus land the city annexed west of I-95 in 2022 and 2023, add newer construction. Mature oaks shade a lot of these streets, which is pleasant until they drop limbs in a storm or keep a roof damp enough to grow algae.
After a look at the roof and the attic, we’ll show you photos and explain plainly whether a roof repair covers it or a roof replacement is due. Homeowners can read about our residential roofing, business owners along Fiske Boulevard or Murrell Road about our commercial roofing, and anyone buying or selling can schedule a roof inspection. Not every leak means a new roof. Roof repair calls in Rockledge usually come down to a few things: shingles lifted or torn off in a storm, worn pipe boots and flashing around vents and chimneys, an oak limb through the roof, or soft spots on the low-slope sections over lanais and carports. Water often travels before it shows up as a ceiling stain, so we trace it back to where it gets in rather than patching the spot above the stain. We repair shingle, metal, tile and flat roofs, and we match the existing materials when they’re still made. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day. If the deck is rotted in several places or the roof is near the end of its life, we’ll tell you plainly when a replacement makes more sense than another repair.
Rockledge has its own Building Division, and re-roofs are on its list of permitted work. Applications go through the city’s SmartGOV portal or by email, and shingle jobs need a re-roof supplement form and a deck nailing affidavit. The division can be reached at (321) 221-7540. Some homes with a Rockledge mailing address may sit in unincorporated Brevard County, where the county issues the permit instead, so we check the parcel’s tax district before applying. For homes under an HOA, we stick to the association’s approved roofing products and colors, and the permit application is ours to file.
A new Rockledge roof has to satisfy the Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023), which applies statewide. Brevard lies outside the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, but it’s still a high-wind area, so shingles are nailed to their wind-rated pattern and inspected before the permit is closed. Many homes from the 1960s through the 1990s predate the March 2002 statewide code, which means a tear-off brings two upgrades: re-nailing the deck to today’s schedule and putting down a secondary water barrier. If the house sits within the wind-borne debris region and is worth $300,000 or more, its roof-to-wall connections get strengthened too, though the code caps that at 15 percent of the reroof price. When it’s done, a wind mitigation report can show your insurer the new features. Florida requires insurers to offer credits for the ones that qualify. For My Safe Florida Home grant work, we’re an approved program contractor.
Just south, we’re also the roofers in Viera and Suntree, and nearby we’re roofing in Cocoa, Merritt Island and Port St. John.
My house near the river is older. Does that change the job?
It can. Older homes may have plank decking or framing that differs from modern trusses, and an attic check before pricing helps catch rotted wood so it’s in the estimate instead of a surprise.
Do oak trees shorten a roof’s life?
They can. Shade and leaf litter hold moisture and clog valleys and gutters. Keeping limbs trimmed back and clearing debris after storms helps.
Can I switch to metal or tile?
Often, yes. We install both, and whether it fits depends on the house’s structure, your HOA and your budget.
